Background

I was assigned to this project along with a team of designers to create an interactive quiz app tailored for kids. The objective was to design an engaging and educational experience that not only tested knowledge but also encouraged curiosity and learning in a fun way.

The project was divided into two age groups. This division ensured that the app addressed the cognitive and interaction needs of both groups effectively.

I was assigned to lead theme 2 of the app, so....

The core challenge addressed by Cedarwood was to design an educational platform that keeps children aged 6–10 both motivated and consistently engaged, while also delivering measurable learning outcomes.

The rise of digital learning solutions hasn’t automatically translated into engagement for younger learners. The core challenge addressed by Cedarwood was to design an educational platform that keeps children aged 6–10 both motivated and consistently engaged, while also delivering measurable learning outcomes. Many learning apps fail to hold children’s attention due to lack of interactivity, repetitive content, or insufficient adaptation to age and learning styles. Cedarwood aims to bridge this gap by transforming learning into a game-like experience, blending educational rigour with playful elements that appeal to both children and their parents.

Recent years have seen a dramatic shift in how children absorb information moving from classroom bound, textbook centric learning to interactive, visually-rich, and media-driven formats.

Traditional learning focused on memorization and passive listening, with classrooms relying on textbooks and teacher-led instruction. In recent years, there has been a shift to student-centered, active learning that promotes critical thinking and hands-on activities.

The digital era has accelerated this change, introducing educational technology and interactive tools. Today, children benefit from adaptive learning apps, online quizzes, and gamified experiences that offer personalized feedback, making education more engaging and accessible than ever before.

Why Do Kids Lose Interest in Learning Apps?

Some of the common findings were

Activities were often too repetitive, leading to boredom and disengagement over time.

Learning content was sometimes too advanced or too simplistic, failing to remain age-appropriate and challenging.

Lack of features for collaborative play or competition meant children missed opportunities for social learning and friendly rivalry.

Parental controls were either missing or insufficient, making it hard for adults to track progress or intervene appropriately.

Many apps failed to provide immediate feedback or recognition, causing children to lose motivation quickly.

1

Personalized, Adaptive Content:

The content library to be structured to offer quizzes and activities tailored to age, grade, and individual performance. This may ensure that every child would find an appropriate level of challenge, reducing frustration and boredom.

2

Promoting Social Engagement:

Enable kids to invite friends, create group quiz sessions, and compete or collaborate in real time. These features can turned solitary study into a shared adventure, increasing excitement and retention while supporting both individual and collective progress.

3

Gamifying Learning Experiences:

Introduce game inspired elements such as badges, leaderboards, and visual progress trackers to incentivize participation and celebrate achievements. Playful themes and lively animations to keep quiz experiences fresh and enjoyable.

Thanks for your time!

At present, the app is under development, and the design solutions we created are being translated into functional features. This transition phase is an exciting opportunity to see how our design decisions hold up in real use, and it allows room for iteration based on feedback once the first version goes live.

The project was divided into two age groups. This division ensured that the app addressed the cognitive and interaction needs of both groups effectively.
